SophisticatesA Tech Venture Company
Question the limits.
Many limits are not laws of nature.
Sophisticates is a tech venture company. We don't start with a company. We earn the right to start one. We start our own companies and don't invest in other people's.
The gap between what people have and what's attainable.
Most persistent constraints don't survive because people think they are good. They survive because everything adapts around them.
01MeasurableCan we measure the shortfall?
We don't start from a hunch. We start from a number: how far the best available option falls short of what's attainable, stated plainly enough that someone else could check it.
02CostlyDoes it cost people something real?
A gap only matters if it costs someone time, money, safety or opportunity. If nobody is worse off for it, we move on.
03RemovableIs there a constraint we can remove?
We look for one constraint that, if removed, would close a large part of the gap. Not every constraint. One we can name and test.
04Paid forIs there a credible customer?
If the first three tests hold but this one doesn't, we publish what we found and move on. No customer, no company.
How a venture
happens
The same sequence every time, from noticing a shortfall to deciding whether a company should exist.
Notice, measure, diagnose
We notice a shortfall, measure it, and work out what's attainable.

Invite the challenge
We look for the constraint behind the gap, then invite experts to attack the analysis before we build anything.

Design and run the test
We design a test, bring in the founding leader before or during it, and run it.

Decide, then spin out
If the test closes the gap, we decide a company should exist and spin it out with its own leader and its own funding.

One venture.
At a time.
Sophisticates → Venture 1, Venture 2, Venture 3. We start the next one once the last has its own leader, its own funding and its own momentum.

View SourceFoundation of rigor
We don't assert a gap. We measure it, and show the number, so anyone can check our work.
When we haven't tested something yet, we say we don't know instead of guessing out loud.
Not a market segment. A person whose problem we could describe without a slide deck.
We run one venture at a time, so it gets the attention it takes to succeed.
We test before we believe, and we're willing to find out we were wrong.

Lachu Man
Basnet
Choose difficult problems. Have the courage to pursue them, the conviction to stay with them, and the focus to keep going when progress is slow. Build something that lasts.
The hardest problems are worth our best years.
Sophisticates was started by Lachu Man Basnet. Lachu has always liked being alone with a hard problem. As a student he noticed that he got bored fast, with almost everything, except when the problem was difficult enough. Then hours disappeared and the work felt like it mattered.

Measure the gap,
test the constraint,
build the company.
Sophisticates starts one company at a time. We measure the gap, name the likely constraint, and build the smallest product that tests whether removing it closes the gap. If it does, we put it in people's hands.

Founding leaders
If you can name what holds your field back, and want to build the company that removes it, tell us. Founding risk and responsibility get founder ownership.

Domain experts
We invite experts to challenge our analysis before we build anything. If that's you, we want to hear where the number is wrong.

Skeptics
When someone challenges an analysis, our answer is: good, show us where the number is wrong.
